Giel Mertens

Giel Mertens holds a Master’s Degree in Strategic Management from the Radboud University in Nijmegen (NL). Since he joined Bax & Company in 2017 as an Innovation Consultant, Giel has worked at the intersection of business, government, and technology with a particular focus on the digital transformation of transportation to help cities and organisations prepare for the future of (autonomous) mobility. By collaborating with local authorities, academia, and industry players, Giel aims to help develop innovative solutions that are driven by value, rather than technology.

Giel has (co-) developed EU collaborative projects that enable SMEs to implement their solutions on autonomous mobility in the urban environment. Furthermore, Giel supports local governments across Europe to adopt new transport modes in the urban environment.

PREPARING CITIES FOR AUTONOMOUS MOBILITY

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have already entered cities through pilots. However, many cities, are not prepared for widespread use, and few have integrated AVs into their transportation plans. How can cities plan for an ambitious future as a livable city while incorporating AVs?
